Transocean has a lot going on right now. This can be a strength but also a weakness. Let’s look to Rex Moore for the details of the stock and where it may be going.

Intangible assets ratio
This ratio shows us the percentage of total assets made up by goodwill and other intangibles. Heiserman says he views anything over 20% as worrisome, “because management might be overpaying for the acquisition or acquisitions that gave rise to the goodwill.”

Transocean has an intangible assets ratio of 9%.

This is down from 22% last quarter. The reason? The company wrote off a large amount of goodwill when it announced earnings in February. At this point, then, the company’s goodwill and intangibles are a much more reasonable percentage of total assets.

But we’re not through; let’s also take a look at tangible book value.

Tangible book value
Tangible book value is simply what remains after subtracting goodwill and other intangibles from shareholders’ equity. If this is not a positive value, Heiserman advises you to run away because such companies may “lack the balance sheet muscle to protect themselves in a recession or from better-financed competitors.”

Transocean’s tangible book value is $12.7 billion, so no yellow flags here.

Be sure to run through all your checks and balances before investing. It looks like they are on a good track, but there are many more things to account for. Keep up that research!

Kodiak is a major oil company that we like to follow on a regular basis. Currently, they are a bit undervalued, and are ready to be bought up. What is their current status? Where are they going? Cris Fangold had the deatils on this stock.

The company with a large exposure to Bakken crude oil as a percentage of overall production is Kodiak. Kodiak has 263.5 million shares outstanding. Most of the oil production for the company comes from the Bakken, due to its recent rapid growth in production. Although it has some legacy oil and gas assets, they are no longer the main focus of the company. To hedge its exposure to wide swings in oil prices, the company has been using swaps. Kodiak is solidly hedged for 2012 against any major price dive.

I believe this is a strong buy recommendation for Kodiak. A prudent long-term investor should definitely take advantage of this sudden closing of the gap between Bakken crude spot prices and West Texas Intermediate crude prices. In February, this gap was a deficit of over $25 and is now at a $1 premium. This spread has been volatile and this favorable pricing may or may not last. However, the takeaway capacity is finally running much faster than the growth in production.

It looks like KOG is on the right track and ready to improve. Continue your research, there may be some big moves in the future and you want to make sure to cash in at the right time.

We like to keep up on the great MLPs that come along in the market place. QR Energy is an MLP we haven’t reported on in the past. However, today is the day! Here is some great info on QRE from Ocean Man.

Recent Stock Price Performance

QRE had its IPO in December of 2010 with an opening price of $19.90. It reached a high of $23.50 in early 2011, and then fell along with the overall market to a low of $17.13 in the fall of 2011. Soon after, the combination of an accretive acquisition and being named to the Alerian MLP Index took QRE up more than 20% in one week. It returned to $23.50 in March of 2012, but then began a steady slide back under $18 when it announced a large secondary public offering of common stock to fund acquisitions.

Outlook

The secondary doubled the float, however the distribution coverage ratio remains a healthy 1.4x. The 25% drop in price may be seen as excessive, and the stock was called oversold byForbesthis month. Baird has declared the overhang of the secondary to be in the rear-view mirror, upgrading QRE to outperform with a price target of $24. With a most recent close of $17.55, the stock is near the bottom of the trading range detailed above. The already-announced distribution increase for second quarter brings the yield to an attractive 11.1% at this price, and QRE’s mission to grow future distributions through strategic production development and accretive acquisitions leads me to believe that the stock is currently offering a favorable entry price.

This MLP has a different outlook in the energy market than some of the previous articles we have discussed. If you are looking to branch out, QRE could be a great choice. Continue your research here, it could really pay off.

Quotes taken from report by Ocean Man, Read the entire article here.

We don’t report too often on midstream oil companies. However, it is important to explore all the elements to the oil industry. If you like your oil stocks, and are looking to expand your portfolio, midstream may be a good route. Aimee Duffy explains why this midstream stock is a good pick.

First-quarter results
Revenue climbed across all three of Plains’ business segments: transportation, facilities, and supply and logistics. Overall, revenue was up 20% over last year to $9.22 billion, and earnings per share came in at $1.58. Analysts expected earnings of $1.52 per share and revenue of $8.46 billion. Profit was also up from $182 million to $230 million over last year.

April wasn’t the cruelest month
Plains was chock-full of announcements in April. The company gave up its seemingly annual hostile takeover bid for its rival, Tulsa, Okla.-based SemGroup. The deal was valued at $1 billion and Plains gave no indication of why it was backing down. You always want what you can’t have, and perhaps this is not the last we’ll hear of this deal.

One deal that did go down was Plains’ acquisition of BP‘s Canadian natural gas liquids assets. Plains picked up 2,600 miles of pipeline, special gas-extracting plants, and storage facilities for $1.67 billion in the deal that closed April 1. Indicative of a strong balance sheet, Plains had enough cash to prefund the acquisition and still begin the second quarter with $2.5 billion in liquidity.

Finally, one of the reasons that midstream master limited partnerships are so enticing for investors is that they typically offer great yields. During the second week of April the company announced it was increasing its quarterly distribution 7.7% per unit. The move brings its yield up to 5.10% and its annualized payout to $4.18 per unit.

PAA has a solid dividend for their investors. If you are looking to expand your oil options, and wanting to find a great dividend, this stock would be a great option. Continue your research here to ensure its a good fit.

There are always oil stocks that are good and those that are bad. Let’s focus on the positive end of things, and looks at a good oil stock buy. We haven’t heard much from Occidental Petroleum, but it looks like they are on track for investor success. Let’s turn to Takeover Analyst for OXY details.

Occidental trades at a respective 10.5x and 9.3x past and forward earnings with a dividend yield of 2.5%. Consensus estimates for Occidental’s EPS forecast that it will decline by 0.5% to $8.35 in 2012, grow by 12.7% in 2013, and then fall by 1% in 2014. Assuming a multiple of 12x and a conservative 2013 EPS of $9.36, the stock would hit $112.32 for 28.1% upside.

Analysts currently rate this oil & gas company a strong buy. Most of Occidental’s production is in liquids, which enables to exploit Brent crude trends while volume increases. Management has done a stellar job in cutting costs over the years and will be able to leverage that strength with increases to scale. Operating cash flow of $12.3B also enables takeover activity for even greater growth.

If you like what you see with OXY, it would be worth the further research. We have favored this stock in the past, and it looks like they are on track for our favoring again!

BP has seen a rough few years. They maintain strength, but keep having little issues along the way. What are the problems they are seeing now? What else could possibly happen? Agustino Fontevecchia has the details.

The company decided to separate its upstream business from TNK-BP, the joint venture run with a group of Russian oligarchs. Profits there were flat at $1.157 billion, with production actually up 4% to 1.019 million barrels of oil equivalent per day after the acquisition of assets in Vietnam and Venezuela.

Moving on to the challenging refining and marketing business, BP saw downstream profits fall dramatically to $924 million from $2.2 billion. The guilty party was the fuels business, where profits fell to $487 million from $1.3 billion.

BP highlighted its refining advantage in the U.S. by having access to cheaper WTI prices, but noted those benefits were more than offset by weak supply and trading performance; the chemicals business did horribly as well.

BP has had a disappointing first quarter. Hopefully, they can step it up again in the next. We will only see as time passes!

Quotes taken from report by Agustino Fontevecchia, Read the entire article here.

There are two energy companies that are busy bees trying to keep their place at the top. It takes a lot of work, but it seems these companies have it under wraps. Le’ts look to Aimee Duffy to see which companies these are.

Eni (NYSE: E )
Following in the steps of ExxonMobil, this Italian energy power has inked a deal with Russia to explore the country’s offshore Arctic resources. Eni signed with the state-owned Rosneft in a deal that could ultimately be worth $100 billion. As in the Exxon deal, Rosneft will gain access to Eni assets in other places, such as Africa, America, and Europe.

Many Fools think companies like Eni and Exxon are foolish (small f) to sign deals with Russia, given the country’s past behavior. It’s a fair point, but Big Oil is running out of options. The majors are making a big push to increase reserves, so expect more deals just like this one.

Halcon Resources (NYSE: HK )
Chief Executive Floyd Wilson is looking to build a patchwork quilt out of the companies he finds in the oil patch. Halcon is picking up GeoResources (Nasdaq: GEOI ) for $972 million in cash and stock.

Keep an eye out for various reports and press releases from these two companies. This will be very telling of where they will be going and when to jump in.

Enterprise Product Partners is working hard transform the company into a cash cow. They are doing this by properly using pipelines and a great three prong plan. What is the plan? Dividend Growth Investor lets us in on the inside scoop.

Since it went public in 1998, the partnership has had the following objectives in mind:

1) Invest in growth opportunities to build or acquire energy infrastructure that will generate returns on investment grate than long term cash cost of capital
2) Provide partners with periodic increases in cash distributions and an attractive total return on investment
3) Preserve financial flexibility and maintain an investment grade balance

Few companies have specifically set the goal to increase distributions to their owners. The partnership has done a great job in accomplishing these goals.
